April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month. Every year in the United States, over 51,000 people are diagnosed with some form of oral cancer. This includes cancers of the mouth, tongue, tonsils and throat. It is a time for everyone to be aware of the dangers of oral cancer and to undergo cancer screenings at their dentist’s office. Early detection greatly improves the chances of a successful recovery. Oral cancer may result in people losing some or all of their teeth, and fortunately, dental implants are great solutions to get those teeth back was the cancer has subsided.

For your first appointment at our office, our dentist in Durango, CO will place a titanium post within your jawbone where the missing tooth was. After the site heals, you will return to the office to get the crown or bridge placed on top. This will allow you to chew food normally again. Some patients require bone grafting to strengthen the jawbone prior to receiving the implant. It is possible the jawbone sustained damage from the cancer, so Dr. Mason O. Miner will inspect the bone first before anything else.

Implant-Supported Dentures

Implants are great if you have lost one tooth. However, some people will lose an entire arch of teeth from oral cancer. In these instances, you may be better off with implant-supported dentures. Dr. Miner will place several implants along the jawbone. A partial denture gets placed on top. Unlike traditional dentures, this restoration will not move around. You also do not have to worry about taking it out each night. You can simply keep the denture in your mouth to eat all of your favorite foods again.
